Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a safe solution for correcting vision. There are two main types of contact lenses- soft and hard contact lenses. There are several important factors that one must consider before wearing them. Conventional soft contacts have about 38-70 percent water that allows oxygen to pass through them and it is easier to wear them. Gas permeable contact lenses are made of firm plastic materials that also allow oxygen to pass through them but they do not contain water. Contacts have different diameters based on their types. For example, gas permeable contacts come in smaller diameters while soft contact lenses have larger diameters. While the gas permeable lenses are difficult to adapt to, soft contact lenses can be worn easily. However, soft contact lenses with high water content may not be a viable alternative as the water in the lenses evaporates faster, causing dry eyes. One may also need to consider the difference in the prescriptions of eyeglasses and contact lenses, as they are different from each other. To know the right power for one's contact lenses, it is important to calculate the vertex distance. It is the distance from the back side of a lens to the front of one's cornea.

Contact Lens Materials

Contact lenses are made of different materials that serve various purposes:

  • Hydrogel and Silicone Hydrogel-Soft contacts are made of hydrogel and silicone hydrogel materials. Soft contact lenses with hydrogel material were introduced in the early 1970s.
  • Hydrogels are hydrophilic or water-loving polymers that have the capacity to hold huge amounts of water. Hydrogel in soft contacts uses water to carry oxygen to the eyes.

Soft contacts with silicone hydrogel were introduced in the late 1990s. Silicone hydrogel allows more oxygen to pass through the lenses. They are more comfortable to wear and they can be used for longer periods of time than the conventional hydrogel contact lenses. Silicone hydrogel contact lenses are also beneficial for people who have dry eyes.

  • Polymethyl Methacrylate - Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a hard plastic material which does not allow oxygen to pass through the lens. Such lenses were used during the early 1950s, before the soft contacts were introduced.

  • Fluorosilicone Acrylate - Gas permeable contacts are also hard contact lenses but they are made from oxygen-permeable materials such as fluorosilicone acrylate. These contacts also allow more oxygen to pass through the lenses than soft contact lenses made of hydrogel. Gas permeable contacts are more durable and they provide better clarity of vision than soft contact lenses.

In hybrid contact lenses, the centers are made of gas permeable lenses and the surrounding parts are made of silicone hydrogel materials that are used in soft contacts.

  • Contact Lens Diameter

The diameter of a contact lens is measured in millimeters. The diameter is measured from one edge of the lens to the other, to determine its fit over the cornea of one's eye. So the diameter of one's cornea determines the size of the contact lens. A wrong diameter measurement for a contact lens can cause irritation in the eye and lead to blurry vision.

    Contact Lens Vertex Distance

Vertex distance is measured in millimeters and it is an important parameter for accurately calculating the power of the contact lens. The power of a contact lens has different values as compared to an eyeglass power, and this can be explained by calculating the vertex distance. The measurement of the vertex distance minimizes the residual refractive errors when one wears contacts.

    Contact Lens Water Content

Contact lenses that have high water content allow more oxygen to pass through to the cornea, ensuring more comfort to the wearer. Soft contacts with hydrogel material that contains about 40% water are considered to have low water content. Soft contacts with 50% water are considered to have medium water content and soft contacts with high water content comprise more than 60% water.

    Contact lens care

The maintenance of contact lenses varies according to the type of contact lenses and the duration you wear them for. Contacts are of two types - soft contacts and rigid gas permeable contacts. Apart from the daily disposable soft contacts, contact lenses with more wearing time require daily or frequent care to prevent eye infections. And don't forget - the storage cases for your contacts should also be cleaned regularly.

    Basics of Contact Lens Care

Maintaining proper eye health with contact lenses is simple. Below are some tips for taking care of your contact lenses:

  • To keep contact lenses free from dirt and dust, it is important to maintain proper hygiene while handling them. Before removing the contacts from the eyes, one must wash hands with anti-bacterial soap. One should not touch the contacts with wet hands. It is important to dry your hands with a clean towel before removing the contacts. One should also keep his/her fingernails short as long fingernails can tear the lenses.
  • It is important to clean the storage case for your contacts. One should not reuse the old solution for storing the contact lenses. It must be emptied out every time the lenses are removed from the case. The case should be air-dried before you put in the cleaning solution.
  • The cleaning solution of contact lenses should not be transferred into other containers apart from the one that comes along with the lenses. When the cleaning solutions are put in other containers, the solutions can become non-effective.
  • Protein-removal products should only be used after the ophthalmologist's instructions. The ophthalmologist can recommend such products based on the type of contact lenses and the amount of protein that deposits from the eyes in the contacts. Protein-removal products are recommended for contacts that have an extended wear time; they are not necessary for daily disposable contacts.
  • There are different types of solutions available that clean contact lenses. Some of them are daily cleaners, hydrogen peroxide solutions, multipurpose solutions and saline solutions. Hydrogen peroxide solutions disinfect, rinse, clean and store the contacts. These solutions come with a neutraliser that converts the hydrogen peroxide solution to water and makes the contacts easier to wear. With daily cleaners, one has to put some drops of the solution on the hands and rub the contacts carefully. However, one must use other products to rinse and disinfect the contacts. Saline solutions are used to rinse and store the contacts, but they should not be used to clean and disinfect the contacts. Multipurpose solutions are also used to clean, rinse, disinfect and store the contacts.
  • Contacts should not be rinsed with water. Using water as a disinfectant increases the risk of eye infections. One should only wash the contacts with the cleaning solution that comes along with the lenses.
  • Contact lenses that are disposable should not be worn for more than the given time period. For instance, a daily disposable contact lens should be replaced the next day. It is also not advisable to wear contacts while sleeping as the reduced flow of oxygen can cause irritation in the eyes.
  • One must be careful when he/she uses eye drops. Eye drops are essential as the eyes must remain hydrated for wearing the contacts comfortably. One should only use eye drops that are intended for contact lenses. If one uses eye drops that are not meant for contact lenses it can become difficult to fit the lens properly.
  • One should also not smoke while wearing contact lenses. The natural tear film of the eye dries up quickly when one smokes. Smoking also causes the eye to become red. Dry eyes can lead to corneal ulcers and smokers are more likely to suffer from such eye problems. One should not wear contact lenses while swimming as there are higher risks of getting corneal ulcers. Wearing contact lenses while swimming can also cause eye irritation and other eye-related infections.
  • It is important to visit one's ophthalmologist on a yearly basis. And of course, one should visit an ophthalmologist immediately even when there is a slight discomfort in wearing the contacts. This is the best way to prevent an eye infection at a later stage.
